Valium Effort is a spinoff group comprised of two founding members of the Mexican Mud Band, David Maxwell (guitar, vocals) and Erich Kuersten (bass, "vocals"). They were originally called Psyko Iko. Their music can best be described as a combination of Beck, Hot Tuna, Blind Blake, Doc Watson and Sid Barrett. Although their gigs are infrequent, they have accumulated a massive and tenaciously devoted following. Well, not really. But they do know how to get puzzled looks from the audience and complaints from surrounding neighbors.
One of the most treasured/misunderstood aspects of the music of Valium Effort is the lyrical content. Lilting, sublime melodies crossed with incoherent, demonic versing add up to extraordinarily disturbing results!
Witness for yourself the freakshow that haunted the irish pubs of Manhattan for three years. See for yourself why Valium Effort was called "Nuttin' but Trouble" by Seamus McMuffin of Flannery's Pub in Chelsea.
