HOW TO STUFF AN AMERICAN QUILT Starring: Winona Ryder Winona Ryder is her usual fetching self in this multi-hanky chick flick. The story involves a bunch of old bitties recalling their first loves as they sit around and prepare Winona's "wedding quilt" She's about to marry the moronic Dermot Mulroney, but the voice of reason is tugging in the form of a hot-bodded Latin male she meets at the community pool. Mostly, it's the old biddies who get to chaw the scenery as they flashback to a time when they were played by younger, prettier actresses. Each of their whimsy-choked fables carry the same direct-to-girls message: "Soon you will be old and ugly, so don't let go of your man, no matter how much of a pig he is", a very pretty sentiment that will no doubt depress the girls and amuse the males, as it should be. On the whole, the film is a superior product, effortlessly flowing back and forth from flashback to present day, and there's even a bit where the old ladies smoke pot! So if it's a chick's choice night at the video store, you could do a lot worse than pretend to reluctantly compromise with this little offering. B
